03 Aug Trustee – GCLT

Three Rivers Partnership

Background Information
Established in 2003, the Three Rivers Partnership (3RP) is a charity based in Gillingham, North Dorset.
With a focus on the health and wellbeing of the local community its influence has a wide impact
across the region, with many other local charities and groups looking to it for help and assistance.

In 2009 3RP took on the important task of rebuilding Gillingham Leisure Centre and formed a second
charity called The Gillingham Community and Leisure Trust to manage the project and deliver leisure
services within Gillingham thereafter. In 2010 Riversmeet opened its doors to the public and is now
a continuing local success story and a focus of interest across the leisure centre in the UK.

GCLT is now moving into a period of expansion with the assistance of 3RP’s Executive Management
company. In July 2022 it is planned that a new community facility will open within Gillingham,
followed by a second fitness facility in early 2023.

Following a unanimous decision by current trustees to restructure the organisations, 3RP is now
looking to recruit 2 new Directors to the board of GCLT to help with decision making during the next
period of the charities evolution.

Some Facts About GCLT and Riversmeet
GCLT was formed in 2009 specifically to provide leisure services within Gillingham and the
surrounding areas. Here are some of our key facts:
∙ Riversmeet is the only 100% Community owned leisure centre in the UK.
∙ The charity receives no financial support from the local councils, saving them around £300k
per annum.
∙ Pre-Covid annual income for the business was £1.2m, putting us in the top 10% of charities
in the UK.
∙ Our Pre-Covid peak membership was 1,156 and growing rapidly.
∙ We employ over 60 people, making us one of the largest employers in Gillingham.
∙ Over the last 5 years GCLT has invested over £750k back into the Riversmeet building, in the
process giving it the most technically advanced gym in the region and the most advanced
and environmentally friendly heating system available.

What we are looking for.
You do not need to have a background in the leisure industry, our staffing and management structure
means that you will have all the support you need to help understand the intricacies of our business
and service provision. You should have a background in Senior Management within the SME
business world as our business has been successful off the back of well informed, educated debate at
Board level.

Being inquisitive and willing to challenge our Executive Management both in and out of meetings is
therefore imperative. Over time it is envisaged that these two positions will become the go to
resource for 3RP on how GCLT is being run and what the impact of larger strategic decisions may
have on its running.

It could be that you are a member of Riversmeet, but this is not a pre-requisite. More importantly
you should have a passion for helping in the community and a desire have an impact on the health
and wellbeing of those who live and work in North Dorset.
It is our aim over the next 5 years to grow GCLT from a pre-Covid turnover of £1.2m to £2m through
investing in additional sites and capacity at Riversmeet.
What are the time expectations?

As a board both 3RP and GCLT meet on a quarterly basis, where we aim keep meetings concise and
focused. Day to day running of the centre is undertaken by our Executive Management team, so the
focus of our discussions will be on the strategic direction of the charity.
Board reports will be distributed prior to meetings in order for you to prepare fully, this means that
on a weekly basis you could be investing as little as a couple of hours of your time in reading emails
and adding your thoughts to the general operations of the site. Of course, if you would like to invest
more time in making GCLT a success that would be most welcome!

What should you do now?
