3. Fit and Healthy

30 May 3. Fit and Healthy

Being healthy and fit isn’t a fad or a trend it’s a lifestyle – unknown

Life is such a treadmill these days and we find difficulty scheduling in anything but work or rushing from here to there.  Despite living in a beautiful county with a rural backdrop and not too far from undulating beaches caressed by rippling waves, how often do we actually STOP and take the time to appreciate our hometown?

Business owners struggling with the weight of changing tax reporting, uncertainty over Brexit alongside the ever increasing need to be at the top of your game.  Working mothers, juggling work, home and their child’s school needs.  School Leavers unable to find local work, unsure and unable to afford to go to university and faced with an array of untested options in a world of diverse new career paths.  Is it any wonder the word ‘stress’ has become such a byword of our everyday language and part of most doctors’ diagnoses?

Gillingham Chamber of Commerce and Industry have many members who have our welfare at the heart of their business.  Health and fitness come in many different forms and can be addressed by a myriad of varied treatments.

Chamber member Fitness by Design has a large membership right up to people in their 90s and offer an assorted level of fitness training from gym equipment to group training sessions.  There are trained members of staff for advice and information who are always with you on your individual journey.

Looking after your eyes is fundamental to your well being.  Whatever age you are or reach, Chamber member Robert Frith Opticians is situated in the High Street and has appointments from 9 in the morning till 5.30pm Monday to Friday, also open on Saturday till 3 pm.   The staff are friendly and happy to help or advise on style, size and the multitude of different designs in eyewear.

People get confused between Chiropractic and Osteopathy as the distinctions between them are blurred.  In very generic terms the Chiropractor will treat your spine, the nerves and muscles that link the skeleton.  An Osteopath will look at a wider holistic view of your general health with a view that every part of your body is linked and treatment can be a referred trigger for a self-healing process.  Chamber members Gillingham Chiropractic Clinic and Karen Lester Osteopath can explain their processes and functions far better than I can.

Stress by definition is not a visual or even physical illness yet it is the underlying cause of many issues including mental health problems.   The biggest killer of our young men is now suicide which is a sad state for this civilised world to have reached.   Thankfully people are talking about mental health with campaigns such as ‘Ok not to be OK’ and the young royals doing their bit to talk about it particularly with well-known icons in ‘A Royal Team Talk’.  As well as young men’s health, Dementia is another devastating unseen mental issue.

Here in Gillingham, we have a team dedicated to helping us become Dementia Aware led by Julie Hawkins from Gillingham Town Council and Anne Kings. We hope at a later date to have a talk from Anne about how our businesses can be more aware and what we can do to help dementia sufferers and how to be more understanding and perceptive to unseen health issues.

Take time to visit some of our members and spend time on yourself.  Leisure and ‘Me’ time is not a lazy attitude it is a way of being pro-active and keeping yourself fit.  If you are fit and calm your business will thrive through a clear and healthy symbiosis with your energy levels.
