‘Community – A group of people living in the same place or having a particular characteristic in common’ Oxford English Dictionary

Gillingham Chamber of Commerce and Industry is a group of businesses intertwined with the structure and make-up of the local community.    At the heart of this group are local companies and traders who get involved to benefit the town and the surrounding environment with practical and commercial help and support.

Gillingham Town has many thriving and vibrant groups all pulling together and weaving the intricate layers of the town’s fabric.   Each one sews its own individual thread stitching its way round others to strengthen and reinforce the tapestry of Gillingham.

With a thriving top school and 4 primary schools within the town boundaries there are a wealth of children requiring entertainment, structure and learning outside of the school environment giving rise to many sports clubs – Rugby, Football, Hockey, Swimming, and Dance groups.  The cadets provide DofE opportunities and the brownies, guides, badgers, cubs and scouts all create their own challenges and rewards.

Within the boundaries of Gillingham and Shaftesbury there are the fund-raising groups who give so much back to the town such as Rotary, Round Table, Probus, Inner Wheel, WI, and Lions.  The Lions are in much evidence at this time of year assisting Santa with his local travelling around Gillingham making sure he has the youngsters on his list and that they are being good.   They will also, be bringing him to the Chamber’s Victoriana Fayre on the 2 December.

For the talented, or creative or those wanting specialist hobby there are GANG, FOGS, Bowling, Country Dancing, Cribbage and Bridge Clubs, Walkers, Wheelers, Singing, History Society, Knitwits, Quilting, and Scribblers amongst many more.   The town offers a community cinema once a month and annual events such as Gilfest, Gillingham in Gear and the Carnival.

The elderly of the town are celebrated for their experiences and knowledge and there are plenty of groups and societies for them.  U3A offer diverse and entertaining challenges and hobbies, Coffee Companions means that you need never sit on your own wishing to be part of the community round you.  The Mindful Café and Dementia Friends all supporting and encouraging the people who need to be part of the community.

The businesses play a huge part in the make-up of the town.   Large industrial businesses such as Dextra and Sigma employ many hundreds if not more local people. Chain stores such as Waitrose, Factory Shop, TSB and Lloyds all adorn the town centre, interspersed with family firms such as Cullingfords and Clifford T Shean embedding the local heritage.  Small local firms are knitted through the community such as Chaffers, Dorset Chef, Vale Secretarial, Jennifer Trim Designs, Farnfields and Andrews & Palmers.    The Gillingham Business Breakfast club who meet for an early breakfast 4 times a year, offer networking opportunities along with invaluable snippets into changing trends and practises.

The icing on Gillingham Town’s community spirit comes to the fore at this special time of year with the Gillingham Community Christmas Day Meal.  An opportunity for the community to open its arms and give something back.   The response is overwhelming and there is always a place for a volunteer, supplier and of course the lonely, the needy, those that may not see anyone else on Christmas Day.   This is where the community weaves its finest masterpiece.  Many of the above listed companies, groups, and sections of the town together with private individuals and families, groups, schools join forces to deliver not just a meal but a coming together of the community of Gillingham on Christmas Day.

Many of our Gillingham Chamber members are involved in the Christmas Day meal in small or large ways.
